What started as a face-lift – like so many renovations do – turned into a taken to the studs, eighteen-month rehab. For inspiration, they spent a lot of time looking at what Richard Meier was doing in the sixties: “Small wood homes with very strong, geometric shapes, all painted one color,” says Thomas, a Meier protégé himself. But rather than Meier’s typical shade of choice, white, Maria wanted something that complemented the landscape, which is how they landed on the sooty, matte black exterior.” – Heather Summerville
